How a spirit rattle is made

Each rattle is thrown or hand-built as a hollow form, with small clay beads sealed inside before it is closed. That is why no two sound the same: the number of beads, the wall thickness and the fired shape all change the voice. Many here are raku fired, which produces the crackle and the metallic sheen you can see in the glaze. The finish is decorative, so keep them dry.
