The Fireside Fiddlers, Volume 1: Common Fiddle Tunes of Coos County New Hampshire
''The Fireside Fiddlers, Volume 1: Common Fiddle Tunes of Coos County New Hampshire'', came about as a result of a conversation between local fiddler Patrick Ross and Rick Tillotson, chair of the Tillotson Center Committee. In the hopes of helping raise needed funds to further construction work on the center, Patrick came up with the idea of the CD as a fundraiser. As he recalls, ''I called every fiddler I knew within 40 miles of Groveton and invited them over to my house. We wrote out a list of tunes we all knew and I hit the record button.'' The CDs were recorded in Patrick's living room on March 14, 2010, have been professionally produced by Ross's Wolftone Studios and feature the stunning photography of Heather Burkham.
Fiddlers included Joyce Ball of Lancaster, NH; Paul Cormier of Randolph, NH; Lyndall Demers of Lancaster, NH; Gordon Gray of Groveton, NH; Charlie Jordan of Clarksville, NH; John Roberge of Groveton, NH; Dick Rosser of Guildhall, VT and Patrick Ross of Groveton, NH.
''There was no rehearsal and no sheet music,'' Patrick explained. ''Some fiddlers played really old instruments and some were brand new. I made sure everyone was in tune and I counted in each piece. Other than that, there were no guidelines. I really wanted the session to feel as casual as it could be. It was a genuine glimpse into a house party that might have happened 200 or more years ago.''
The Tillotson Center will be a theater, museum and art gallery and will host nationally touring acts as will as local presentations. Since December of 2008, funds have been raised to design and construct the building.
